Kamilla Thorsen

Jewellery designers seek inspiration in different places. Perhaps the people around them influence them most. Maybe city life or technology seizes their imagination. For jewellery designer Kamilla Thorsen, nature bestows her with endless inspiration. In July 2018, Kamilla founded her jewellery brand in Denmark. Her studio, based in the historic seaside town of Svendborg, offers her a place where nature is on her doorstep.

From the organic texture of seascapes to the raw materials nature offers, each piece of Kamilla’s jewellery has a visible connection to the earth. Combining Art Nouveau and Art Deco aesthetics with natural forms, this designer handcrafts unique jewellery for the modern woman.

Kamilla was educated at the Goldsmithing School in Copenhagen and took several jewellery courses before leaving for England to study Art and Printed Textiles at Brighton University. She was handpicked by JewelStreet for her stylish and chic pieces that capture the beauty of nature. Scroll down and hear the interesting and inspiring story behind Kamilla’s brand.

How did your brand begin?

My brand was born as a result of a desire to create and learn new skills. A move back to my native country of Denmark prompted that. I had resided in England for half my life before moving from busy London to a small island in Denmark. A complete lifestyle change and a new beginning.

'England was my home for almost half my life and both Brighton and London influenced my work and ethics as a designer. I kept making and designing jewellery as a hobby and so it evolved and is now a full time business.

After some time selling at places like Portobello Road market, I developed a customer base and opened the award winning jewellery boutique in Shoreditch named Thor & Wistle. It was a fantastic location for us as young designers and with hardly any budget the store was built from used and salvage materials.'

Values are really important to us at JewelStreet. What are your core brand values?

Individuality, details and function are the core values my brand represents and that I can relate to personally.

How is your jewellery made?

My jewellery is primarily made by hand in my studio in Denmark, whilst some pieces are partly made in a small workshop in England by skilled craftsmen. I keep the making and purchasing process as ethically as possible.

Are there any specific manufacturing/crafting techniques you use?

I love working with wax, cutting and shaping it to create something individual. Currently I spend time hammering and forging metals and that creates some unusual organic forms I wouldn't have come up with otherwise.

How do you want someone to feel when they wear your jewellery?

I want the wearer of my jewels to feel like a freely inspired individual, adorned and wearing something that lasts and adds to their own personality.

If you could only wear one piece from your collection, what would it be and why?

I would wear the shell pendant with gemstones. This piece echoes summer and holiday to me. The textures and many detailed colours of the seaside.

Do you have any exciting future plans and where do you see your brand in 5 years?

As a new business, I am growing organically and launching in stores this autumn. I want to see my pieces on strong independent women in the years to come and also make a lot more one-off pieces and limited editions using vintage components.

What's the best piece of advice you've been given? (And have you actually used it?)

Do what you are good at. Spend the most time at what you actually love and is good at, then the rest will flow. Whenever I do use this advice it seems to work.
